Touch Screen Usability

Smartphones and tablets are the fastest growing segment of internet capable devices. This introduces an interesting problem to most sites that have drop down menus. Just how do you mouse over on a touch screen??

The answer is really a lot easier than you might think, and most menu systems support it. Since there is no such thing as a mouse over on a touch screen, you have to give the users the ability to "click" on the parent menu item in order to activate the drop down. Since most sites link the parent menu to content, the user is never able to view the sub-menus.

The solutions is as easy 1-2-3.

  1. First, create a copy of the parent menu item
  2. Move the copy so that it is a child of the original menu item
  3. Change the original menu item type to "External Link" and link it to "#"

Now your parent menu item does not take the user off the current page giving them access to the drop down menu.
