Eight days late!

That's right, the release of Joomla 1.7.0 stable is 8 days late! Frankly, I am a little surprised that it actually came out. This is definitely a big moment for the Joomla! project because it validates the 6 month release cycle. The good news is that it was a few ways late due to the dev team making sure that it would be a simple upgrade from 1.6. The bad news is that if you are on a 1.5 site, you will still have to migrate your site and April 2012 is not as far away as it sounds right now.

True to their word, everyone on the 1.6 series will have an easy time with thie update, even though it is a new version release. If you choose to do it the easy way, it will only be a few steps to get you on the latest and greatest.

  1. Make sure you are on 1.6.5 or 1.6.6. If you are not, then you will need to update to one of those versions first.
  2. Navigate to the Extension Manager, then click the Update link
  3. Click the Find Updates button
  4. Check the box for Joomla and click the update button

If you are on an earlier version of 1.6, then you will get a blank screen once the update is complete. Simply press reload on your browser and that will initiate the second update to 1.7. That's it. No messing about with extension code or rewriting your template. Just click it and rip it!

Nice work Joomla Dev Team!
